How to Grow Basil Indoors Year-Round (Windowsill Guide)
Learn how to grow fresh basil on your windowsill all year long with this simple indoor growing guide.
Why Grow Basil Indoors?
Fresh basil from the grocery store wilts within days and costs $3–4 per bunch. A single indoor basil plant produces fresh leaves for months and costs under $5 to start.
What You Need
- A 6-inch pot with drainage holes
- Quality potting soil (not garden soil)
- Basil seeds or a starter plant
- A sunny windowsill (south-facing is ideal)
- Water
Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Step 1: Choose Your Basil Variety
Sweet basil is the easiest for beginners. Other good indoor varieties include Thai basil, lemon basil, and Genovese basil.
Step 2: Plant Your Seeds
Fill your pot with moist potting soil. Scatter 5–8 seeds on top and cover with a thin layer of soil (about 1/4 inch). Press gently.
Step 3: Provide Warmth and Light
Basil needs 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. A south-facing window works best. If your window doesn't get enough light, a small LED grow light ($15–25) works perfectly.
Step 4: Water Properly
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Basil hates soggy roots.
Step 5: Harvest Regularly
Once your basil has 3 sets of leaves, start harvesting. Always pinch from the top — this encourages bushy growth. Never remove more than 1/3 of the plant at once.
Common Indoor Basil Problems
- Leggy, stretched growth: Not enough light. Move closer to window or add grow light.
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering. Let soil dry slightly between waterings.
- Flowers appearing: Pinch off flower buds immediately to keep leaves growing.
- Drooping: Usually underwatering. Give it a good drink.
Tips for Year-Round Success
- Start new seeds every 2–3 months for continuous harvests
- Feed with diluted liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks
- Keep away from cold drafts and heating vents
- Room temperature (65–75°F) is perfect
